Ever After is an interactive-fiction reading service operated by TeraPixel LLC (“we”, “us”). You can reach us through Help, which is answered in the app.
Ever After is not for children under 13
You must be at least 13 to create an Ever After account. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13.
This is enforced, not merely stated. Registration asks for a date of birth and the server refuses any date below the minimum — a refusal the browser cannot override. When we refuse a registration for age, we store nothing at all: no email address, no username, no account record, no log entry tying the attempt to a person. The only thing kept is a marker in that browser’s session recording that a refusal happened, which contains no date of birth and no identity.
If you believe someone under 13 has an account, tell us through Help. On learning of it we will delete the account and the personal information associated with it.
What we collect, and why
When you create an account: your first and last names, email address, a public pen name / username, and a password (stored only as an Argon2 hash — we never hold the password itself), your date of birth, and the time you accepted the terms. Account names help you set up your profile; your first name is initially used for Circle comparisons and can be changed in Profile. Your last name stays private unless you include it in your public pen name. We collect the date of birth to apply the age floor above and to decide which content ratings you are eligible to read. We do not use it for advertising or profiling.
As you read: which books you have opened, where you are in each one, the choices your journeys have taken, chapters reached, rewinds used, and anything you have unlocked — codex entries, achievements, artifacts and letters. This is what allows a book to keep your place and to remain your own version of the story. We also store your favourites, your ratings and reviews, and your reading preferences such as theme and text size.
Your Notebook: when you keep a word, highlight a passage or write a note, we store that item with your account so it can sync across your devices. Saved words may include a definition, pronunciation and the passage where you found them. These items are private to you and are not included in Circle sharing or the staff reading-activity view. They are not sent to an outside AI service. You can remove individual items or download your Notebook from its reading-tools panel.
Pending Notebook edits are kept in encrypted storage on your device until they can sync. Signing out locks access to that local Notebook. This protects the local cache; it is not end-to-end encryption of the copies held by Ever After. Deleting your account also deletes the Notebook records held by the service.
When you contact us: the content of help requests you send, and our replies. Readers are answered in the app rather than by email.
Automatically: the session cookies that keep you signed in, and the age-screen marker described above. Our servers also write ordinary request logs — the method, the path, the time and the address the request came from, but not the contents of what you read or send. Those logs are a rotating buffer of at most three 10 MB files on our own server, overwritten as new entries arrive; we do not archive them.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for behavioural advertising.
Who can see your reading
Your reading is private from other readers until you connect with someone in Circle. When you and another reader connect, you both see each other's library: what you're reading and where you are, the endings you've found, the choices you made, and your achievements and discoveries. You only see each other's books that you could open yourselves, and connections are only possible between readers in the same age group.
You can keep any book private from your Circle, or disconnect at any time; either takes effect immediately. Your email, birthdate, reading pace and private notes are never shared.
Your Circle friends also see your profile name beneath your username, along with your reader portrait.
Reviews and ratings you publish are visible to other readers under your username.
Staff access
Administrators can see your username, reader number, books, saved chapter progress and last saved story activity to understand how the service is being used. While a signed-in reading tab is visible and online, it checks in about every 30 seconds. We keep only its latest check-in per journey, not a history of reading sessions; it is deleted with the journey. Recent check-ins help administrators see which reading tabs are open. This view does not include private notes, messages or individual story choices. Circle privacy settings control sharing with other readers and do not hide this administrative activity view. Opening this view is recorded in our audit log; it does not send you a notification.
Staff may access account and catalogue records to operate the service, investigate reports, and enforce the content rules. Moderation and publishing actions are recorded in an audit log, including who took them. Access to the more sensitive administrative functions requires a second authentication step.
Where it is stored, and for how long
Data is held on infrastructure operated by TeraPixel LLC in the United States. Accounts persist until deleted. You can delete your account yourself, and doing so removes it and the personal information with it — your journeys, preferences, favourites, ratings and anything you posted publicly. It is immediate, with no grace period, and it cannot be undone. A recovery window would mean the data still existed during it, which is exactly what someone deleting their account is asking not to be true. Staff can also delete an account, and do so on learning a holder is under 13.
Verification and password-reset tokens are short-lived and expire automatically.
Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export your personal information, and to object to certain processing. You can delete your account yourself from your profile at any time. For anything else, ask through Help and we will respond there.
Changes
We will post changes on this page and update the date at the top. If a change materially affects how we handle your personal information, we will say so rather than only changing the date.
